Arid Africa and Madagaskar – the pavilion B, upper floor

The movement of continents during the evolution of the Earth caused a distinct difference between the flora of Madagascar and the flora of the African continent because Madagascar moved close to Africa relatively recently. A common feature is the large extent of dry or arid areas, the deserts and semideserts.

In these dry areas one can find plants with thickened leaves or stems, the so called succulents. They are grown by enthusiasts because of their bizarre appearance arising from the adaptation of the original normal plant organs. Some growers are attracted by the fact that many species of succulents are very difficult to grow, requiring expert knowledge and practical skills.
